Captain's Report

The season began with a close game away with Stocksfield. They were all out for 122, with Richard Hopper (3-23) demolishing their top order with 3 wickets in one over including their pro. The last 5 wickets fell for 13 runs as the lower order were ripped apart by Andy Denyer (3-17) and Jon Varley (2-9). We subsided to 29-4 but opener Chris Barlow (27) and Jon (44*) led the recovery before 3 more wickets fell for the addition of only 1 run. Andy (14*) and Jon then had a partnership of 70, John hitting the winning runs off the last ball.

New opponents for this season were Ovingham who scored 116-7 in 30 overs before Stuart Taylor (93*) and Phil Barlow (22*) gave us the 10 wicket win in 18.2 overs.

On a baking hot day Genetics opted to field and we reached 208-8 in 40 overs. Chris Barlow continuing to open, with 35, Richard Moller 44, Balu Dorani 31 and a cameo 39* from Mark Wheldon off 30 balls. Genetics got 127, Steve Eglintine 2-13, Andy Denyer 2-19 and Mark 2-17.

Blagdon got us all out for 138, Carl Bevan (29) top scoring. Blagdon crusied to 139-4, despite both openers being bowled round their legs by left arm seamers.

Against Victorians we scored 210-6, Stuart Taylor (75) and Michael Robinson (38*). Andy Denyer opened the bowling with 3-20. Victorians were all out 155, with Phil Barlow 3-28.

On another blazing hot day we went on the "Sunday Team tour" to Eglingham. After losing early wickets James Ottaway (40) and Chris Morgan (65), his first fifty for the club, saw us to 197-9. Their top order was blown away by Jonny Appleby (4-18) as they were reduced to 47-6 before being dismissed for 153, all 12 of them!!

The next game against Victorians was dominated by the bat. We struggled to 128-6 off 25 overs with Richard Moller (31) and James Ottaway (30). We the raced on to 286-7 in the remaining 15 overs with John Moller (100* of 53 balls) and Alex McLean (72* off 43) combining for a partnership of 133. At the 20 over drinks break during their reply though they were 157-0 but some crucial wickets saw us hold out for a 10 run win.

KSTOB the following week was a no contest as they scored 233-5 and we were 75 all out.

On a dark and rainy day we played at Blagdon, holding them to 145-9, Andy Denyer (4-27) but only managed 128 in reply.

The Eglingham return saw us score 181-8, Neil Pinnock (42) and Jonny Appleby (37*). Eglingham scored 77-8.

The second Genetics game saw us get 138-9, John Varley (28) and Chris Morgan (21). They were 131 all out, Andy Denyer 3-29, John Varley (3-12). Jonny Appleby's 6 overs for 5 runs somehow failing to take any wickets.

Final game of the season was University Staff. The game was filled with friendly sledging, perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. We scored 211-6, John Varley (67) and Alex McLean (60). Andy Denyer (4-64) and John Varley (3-11) restricting them to 177.

This year there was a core of players who were in the side nearly every week. We have seen the emergence of Andy Denyer as a spin bowler and John Varley as an all-rounder. Hopefully we will be able to continue in the same way next year.
