John played for the club for just four years, debuting in 1974 but played just one game in 1977. An exceptionally prolific bowler he averaged less than 10 runs a wicket throughout his Ponteland career. John took 65 wickets in 1975 and 69 wickets in 1976, finishing with 174 wickets in just 48 games, a staggering 60.3% of which were bowled.

In just 7 cup matches he also took 5 wickets in an innings 4 times. Bowled a spell of 20 overs 6-17 against Swans in 1975 and also recorded a spell of 6 overs 3-0 against Victorians in a friendly in 1974, one of only 2 spells for the club where no runs were conceded.
